Financial Assistance

There are a huge number of ways to help you offset the cost of your degree. Full details of these are available through Macquarie University's Student Support Services. Also have a look at the Scholarships available to you.

For instance, there is a range of different government financial assistance payments and allowances such as Austudy, Abstudy, Youth Allowance or Disability Support Pension. These are generally administered by Centrelink. Even if your friends or family assume that you are not eligible, Centrelink advises that you still apply as you may be eligible.

If you are receiving a Centrelink payment and living away from your permanent home, you might be eligible for a fares allowance to help you to cover the cost of traveling between home and Macquarie University.

Casual Employment

If you still need extra money then getting a part-time job can give you the extra income you need. There are a variety of opportunities for casual, part time and vacation work within the university and local businesses. The Career Development Office will help with more information about employment opportunities and job seeking assistance.

Student Loans and Grants

Macquarie University, through the Office of Financial Services offers interest free loans to students to cover the cost of student items such as textbooks, computers and living expenses. Also offered are student grants (non repayable funds) to students who are affected by exceptional circumstances.

Financial Assistance for Accommodation

Student Support Services has excellent advice on financial assistance for accommodation, including accommodation scholarships, bursaries and prizes offered by Dumore Lang College, Robert Menzies College and Macquarie University Village.

Also investigate what is available from the NSW Department of Housing.

Commercial Loans

Depending on the bank/financial institution and your circumstances you may be able to borrow up to $10,000 or $20,000 through special loans and packages available to tertiary students. Most banks require you have a guarantor for this type of loan, so you'll probably need to discuss it with your parents. For more visit Infochoice.
