Student Opportunities

Macquarie abounds with opportunities for undergraduates looking to expand their horizons beyond the lecture room.

As well as all the clubs and societies which expand your personal interests in their own way, the university also offers particular programs which embrace life beyond Australia such as the Global Leadership Program (GLP), and a vast array of programs which will take you abroad while you study.

Beyond our borders

With every new day, the world gets smaller. People and cultures move closer together as communications technology advances across the globe and barriers come down. Globalisation brings with it new challenges, new opportunities, and new threats. If today’s graduates are to succeed, they must understand the world as it is now, and the forces at work in creating what it will become.

Our Global Leadership Program (GLP) gives you an understanding of the global issues at hand, delving deep into trade, culture, politics, technology, and exploring the ties that bind these topics together.

Other institutions may teach you about the globalising world, but it is Macquarie’s approach to how it is taught that makes us unique. In the GLP Colloquium Series, you’ll learn how to tackle issues, from cross-cultural understanding to counter-terrorism, by participating in 'colloquia' (meaning workshops, seminars, round tables or discussions).

By engaging with ideas and developing practical approaches to discourse, dispute, and understanding, you’ll get experience dealing with the way others see the world, and learning how to deal with differing perspectives. In this way, you’ll not only learn about the issues as they stand now, but develop a mutable skills set that can be used both to confront the issues as they change, and as an asset in professional life.

Going Abroad

If thinking about other countries, people and lifestyles is good, experiencing them first hand is excellent.

Macquarie’s focus on providing overseas experiences is stunning. You can do a Student Exchange available through Macquarie to more than 54 countries worldwide with a choice of 250 institutions and study opportunities for all interests and backgrounds. Better yet Macquarie puts its money where it’s mouth is, through its generous travel scholarship programs.

Or how about taking advantage of the Short Term Tours or Study Programs? These are mainly run during the July holidays so there’s no interruption to your Macquarie study program. You can even credit these activities to your Macquarie course.

If languages are your thing, Macquarie University has many options including In-Country language study, Short Programs, and ongoing tuition.

How about an International Internship? You gain valuable work experience and cultural awareness, and the experience may be recognised through the Global Leadership program or for academic credit.

If you want to do your own thing and volunteer overseas or just travel abroad Macquarie is there with excellent contacts for you to follow-up.
