Telecommunications engineers design, build and manage systems that carry out the transmission, processing and storage of information as electrical or optical signals. A wide range of technologies are involved in any telecommunication system. Satellites, radio, telephone cables, and optical fibres all play an important role in transmitting information. Computers are used to process, transform and store information, and to control its flow.
The Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications Engineering # focuses on the underlying technologies used in telecommunication systems and on the design and implementation of telecommunication networks. Optional units allow the student to develop skills in related areas such as optical technology and photonics, electromagnetics and wireless systems, signal processing and information coding, and computer hardware and software.
Either the telecommunication or software specialisations of engineering may be taken as a double degree with commerce (economics major) or with science (computing major). This is an efficient way to broaden one’s skills and obtain two qualifications in five years.
Engineering involves a high level of technical expertise and substantial project management skills hence an engineering degree can lead to careers in technology development and/or business and management.

You must complete a program of study (major) in one of the following:
Your program of study may include units from the subject areas listed below:
HSC Mathematics (Band 4) or its equivalent is a subject prerequisite for first-year engineering, mathematics and physics units. Higher levels of HSC Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry, Engineering Studies, Senior Science, Information Processes and Technology and/or Software Design and Development or their equivalents are recommended studies. Other units taken as part of a degree may require assumed knowledge, prerequisites or recommended studies and you should refer to the Macquarie University Handbook of Undergraduate Studies for full degree requirements.
The Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications is accredited by Engineers Australia. Graduates are recognised as professional engineers.
