Speech and hearing sciences form the basic studies for a number of professions ranging from clinical work in audiology and speech pathology to involvement in technical projects for speech understanding by means of the next generation of computer user interfaces. All of these areas require knowledge of a range of subjects including biology, computing, physics and psychology, as well as core studies in linguistics.
In speech and hearing science you will study many aspects of the production and perception of spoken language: the way we produce speech sounds using the vocal apparatus, the way the ear responds or sometimes fails to respond to different kinds of sound, how languages differ in the way they use speech sounds and how computers can be used in speech analysis.
The Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences includes four major subject areas: audiology, speech and language pathology, cognitive psychology, and speech research. Within one of these specialties, you will take a core of compulsory units and electives such as biology, computing, or electronics.
