Education - Secondary Teaching

The Area Of Study

If you want a secondary teaching qualification, the Macquarie University Department of Education offers combined programs leading to the award of the Bachelor of Arts with Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Arts – Psychology with Diploma of Education and Bachelor of Science with Diploma of Education, where the academic degree in arts or science, and professional qualifications, are completed in four years.

If you want to teach in secondary schools you will specialise in teaching subjects and choose the degree most appropriate to those subjects. You must take two kinds of units in education: those related to issues, theories and problems of education, and secondly, units in curriculum, methodology and the practical skills of teaching.

Within Macquarie University’s undergraduate teacher education program you will take your education units concurrently with your other studies rather than subsequent to them. In undertaking your professional units in the third and fourth years of your program you will work in cooperation with a ‘master teacher’ in a school over the year.

If you are interested in school counselling, you are advised to complete the Bachelor of Arts – Psychology with Diploma of Education as your first degree and then complete a second qualification in school counselling.
