Christian Studies

The Area Of Study

You may gain Christian perspectives on teacher education at Macquarie University through a creative arrangement with Macquarie Christian Studies Institute (MCSI), a private, fees-based provider located on the Macquarie University campus.

MCSI encourages you to research and critically consider biblical teaching and Christian faith perspectives and to apply them towards addressing workplace and day-to-day issues, especially in teacher education. Foundational units in the first year focus on understanding the Bible, on comparing the Christian worldview with other significant philosophies and belief systems in Western culture, and on understanding and observing the practices of Christian schools. Advanced level units cover a wide range of topics including Christian perspectives on schooling curriculum, school and community. Other units of interest include world religions, ethics, social theory, popular culture, media, science and counselling.

MCSI offers you the opportunity to include a small, specialist strand of units in Christian education as part of your Macquarie University education degree. MCSI offers two awards: a Certificate in Christian Education and Advanced Certificate in Christian Education. As part of the certificate programs you complete school observation units which provide an orientation to teaching and learning in Christian faith-based schools. Christian faith is not a requirement for engaging in these units or a factor in grading.

Accreditation

MCSI units are all approved by Macquarie University. MCSI certificates are not accredited, since the credit for studies with MCSI goes towards your Macquarie University degree. Rather, they constitute a statement of attainment, showing that you have completed a coherent program of study in the area of Christian education.

MCSI units are also accredited by the Australian College of Theology and can be applied to a Bachelor of Christian Studies degree at this College.
