Business Law

The Area Of Study

Business law is the study of law as it relates to business activities. The Department of Business Law offers subjects relevant to business, trade and commerce not only in Australia but also in Asia and Europe. An understanding of legal principles has become an important criterion for employment in the private and public spheres.

There are two main programs which include a study of business law:

  • The business law sub major where business law subjects form an important component of degree programs; and
  • The business law major where business law subjects may constitute a stand alone major.

Graduates in these areas work in occupations such as accounting, marketing and management. The business law units aim to alert and inform prospective professionals to legal issues arising in commerce and professional accounting practice.

More specific objectives include:

  • reinforcing an understanding of the fundamental ideas in the law;
  • focusing on the institutions of the law;
  • developing knowledge of specific rules and principles in certain branches of the law;
  • continuing the development of the basic skills of legal analysis, through the eliciting and application of the law to hypothetical fact situations; and
  • developing general skills of research, analysis and written and oral communication in the context of a language based discipline.
