Philosophy is both a subject and a way of thinking. Philosophy does not tell you what to think, it teaches you how to think for yourself. You learn how to reflect on your views, give reasons for them, and to understand and evaluate other positions and arguments. Philosophy develops creative thinking, communication and problem-solving skills which are invaluable, whatever the chosen profession.
The Department of Philosophy at Macquarie University offers a wide variety of courses in different traditions of philosophical thought and technique (both ’Anglo American’‚ or ‘analytic’‚ and ‘European’). These courses fall into three broad areas: applied ethics and ethical theory, continental and social philosophy, and mind, metaphysics and meaning.
