Macquarie University’s Department of Media, Music and Cultural Studies was the first of its kind in Australia. The Department’s approach combines the critical and the creative, the theoretical and the practical. Media studies prepares you for a world of constant technological transformation, providing not only media skills, but a solid base from which to continue to incorporate new media technologies into future careers.
Units of study offered in media include both contextual studies and reflective production studies covering various aspects of the history, theory and practice of a range of media forms and related topics. Production studies are offered in multimedia, screen production, writing, public relations and radio. In second and third years of study, each variation of study in screen, writing and multimedia enables specialisation in a production area.
The Bachelor of Media is designed to provide you with the opportunity to combine theoretical approaches with the hands-on making of media productions. We understand that working in the 21st century media demands a range of skills and students are encouraged to develop core conceptual, research and writing skills as well as specific production abilities in a range of media forms.
The Bachelor of International Communication introduces students to media and public relations in a globalising world. It offers core units in intercultural relations, international television and global knowledge society. These are taken along with practical and theoretical media units and electives in writing for international business wherein you can develop journalistic, business writing and public relations skills. A well-balanced program will include units on the sociology of development, news and current affairs, the culture of multimedia, international relations, culture, identity and society, and globalisation.
This degree program is designed for students who are interested in gaining knowledge related to intercultural communication, international media, the information society and skills relevant to reporting, writing and public relations.
