Law with Commerce and Business

The Areas of Study

Accounting

Accounting is about the collection, measurement and communication of economic information which is used for planning, reporting and decision making. Accountants are employed in all areas of commerce, industry and government. They are in demand world-wide, and undertake a range of activities such as participating with top management to set future direction for an organisation, analysing potential growth opportunities for new products and markets, developing management information systems to facilitate decision-making and organisational control, as well as reporting on an organisations’s performance.

Actuarial studies

Actuaries analyse and manage the risks of financial contracts. The actuary’s work is based on the application of mathematical, statistical, economic and financial analysis to a range of practical problems in long-term financial planning and management. Actuaries relate numbers to real life. As a student in actuarial studies, you will complete units in accounting, economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, and actuarial studies in the first year. In subsequent years actuarial and other units are studied in greater depth.

Business

Business encompasses the fields of marketing, business administration, human resource management and demographics. The Bachelor of Business Administration is an interdisciplinary course which prepares you for a career in business management without a full specialisation in subject areas such as accounting or economics.

Commerce

The Bachelor of Commerce combined with law will allow you to complete a major from selected subject areas related to business and commerce. Advice should be sought from the relevant department on professional requirements. Further information is also available in the Macquarie University Handbook of Undergraduate Studies.

Finance

Finance is the study of the management of money, banking, investment and credit. It involves the study of financial organisations, markets and instruments, their effect on the flow of funds within the economy, and the control of risk. Finance studies at Macquarie are taught cooperatively by several departments. This allows students to combine studies in finance with complementary studies in economics, accounting and actuarial studies.

Marketing

Marketing is about satisfying the wants and needs of customers. The study of marketing involves understanding how an organisation identifies and anticipates customers’ needs, then organises resources to ensure that those needs are satisfied in a way that builds a long-term, mutually rewarding relationship between the customer and the organisation. Macquarie University marketing degrees include economics and statistics as well as core marketing subjects.
