The Department of Indigenous Studies – Warawara offers units at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for those students wishing to gain a greater knowledge of Australian and other Indigenous societies and cultures. The goal of these units is to provide a ‘grounded’ understanding of the nature of ‘Indigenous’ and related issues (ie both an academic and a social/emotional awareness).
An interdisciplinary undergraduate major in Indigenous studies includes units from Indigenous studies, anthropology, biology, education, history, law, and human geography. These units provide not only their discipline’s
view of a range of Indigenous issues but are also part of a broader, linked inquiry into the nature of Indigenous in the contemporary world.
The Bachelor in Community Management is currently offered to Indigenous students in a mixed mode format of four 10 day on-campus block release sessions per year, with external studies components increasingly supported by web-based and e-learning activities. The degree addresses the educational needs of students who may be working in Indigenous community contexts, in government, non-profit organisations as well as in the private sector.
