The Department of International Studies offers the following languages: Croatian, French, German, Italian, Macedonian, Modern Greek, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. It also offers units in the European Union, Societies of Europe, Screening Europe: Cinema and Identity, Translation: Theory and Practice, Europe: Unity and Diversity, and a European Language Internship.
The aim is to develop proficiency in these languages and to provide an understanding of the society and culture of the countries where they are spoken. Students have the opportunity to participate in short residential or semester-long in-country units. Units are also available by distance education (many online) in all languages. Further, beginner units are available in all of the European languages offered at Macquarie University and these do not require any prior knowledge of the language.
If you wish to study European languages without completing a major as part of a degree you will be able to enrol in either of two undergraduate awards. They are the Diploma in European Languages, which is open to students eligible for admission to a degree program at Macquarie University or another approved institution and the Certificate in European Languages, for which no admission criteria are specified.
