Anthropology

The Area Of Study

Anthropology is the study of human culture and cross-cultural difference. It is comparative and holistic in its approach, taking into account the full range of social and cultural experience. Anthropologists gather knowledge through long-term participant observation with the groups they work with.

Studying anthropology at Macquarie University enables you to study cross-culturally the whole gamut of people’s concerns, including space and architecture, social movements, symbolism, religion, art, dance, food, drugs, sexuality, social class, consumption and commodities, power and politics, and migration and mobility. Anthropology studies the links between individual and society, and those aspects of life that constitute us universally as humans.

Teaching staff in the Department of Anthropology have expertise in a wide range of geographical fields, including Indigenous Australia, South, East, and Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East and South America.
