The Area Of Study

The Department of Ancient History offers the following specialisations: ancient history (general), Egyptology, Greek history from Homer to the Hellenistic cultures under the Roman Empire including Judaism and early Christianity; Roman history from the Republic to the Late Empire and Byzantine period; and Egyptian history from the Predynastic period up to the Ramesside era, while Egypt’s later history merges with the Greek and Roman streams to the Coptic era. Units on society and cultures, myth, drama, religious traditions, women and gender are also available.

Students in ancient history may focus on the study of ancient languages through documentary texts in Egyptian hieroglyphs, Greek, Latin, classical Hebrew and Coptic. Units on archaeological methods and research provide links to teams working on excavations in Egypt, Israel, Italy, Greece and other countries.

If you wish to study ancient languages without necessarily completing a major as part of a degree you are able to enrol in either of two undergraduate awards. The Diploma in Ancient Languages is open to students eligible for admission to a degree program at Macquarie University or another approved institution. The Certificate in Ancient Languages, does not specify admission criteria.
Transfer from Certificate to Diploma is available.
